This enrollment runs from Sun Jul 20, 2014 - Sun Jul 27, 2014

  • learn, imprint, achieve and maintain correct alignment
  • stay longer in asana with the support of the prop to establish the full benefit of the asana
  • study and investigate the asana in greater depth

How to Inspire and Safely Teach Yoga for: Larger, Health Challenged & Neglected Bodies with Lanita Varshell Next held on Fri, Sep 19, 2014 at 11:00 am - 6:00 pm
This enrollment runs from Fri Sep 19, 2014 - Sun Sep 21, 2014
September 19-21, 2014, Friday Evening - Sunday
Friday: 6 - 9 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 11 am - 6 pm (1 hour meal break)
Includes assisting in yoga class Sunday 3:30-5:30 p.m. with plus size and health challenged students. Teachers will help new students in action while Lanita leads the class.

Over 60% of our population is now plus, super-size or health challenged. Many others have simply neglected their body to a point where they cannot fit into most traditional yoga classes safely, or they are working around health issues or body limitations that do not allow them to practice many traditional poses.

This workshop will prepare you to help those who never dreamed they could do yoga learn how to show up for themselves and their bodies again, or sometimes for the very first time.

How do you begin to teach yoga to your student who:
  • Cannot sit cross-legged?
  • Cannot sit back on their heels?
  • Cannot do a lunge?
  • Cannot put their legs together standing or lying down?
  • What if the student loses balance in triangle or standing poses?
  • Most importantly, how do you keep these students motivated, and inspire them to practice this
  • wonderful healing and now doable discipline everyday?

Lanita Varshell (a vibrant plus size woman), is one of the original pioneers of making yoga doable, safe and fun for students with larger bodies, or any size or age student who simply did not fit into the traditional more active Sun Salutation based yoga culture. Because of her unique background, personal health and life challenges, she has a way of helping those that never dreamed they could do yoga find health and happiness through her gentle, joyful teachings. Lanita is an intuitive yoga therapist. She has lived with weight and health challenges all her life, and credits the practice and study of yoga for keeping her out of a wheel chair and mental hospital. Lanita has a gift of bringing hope and comfort to those with chronic and terminal illnesses. She teaches with compassion, humor, and years of practical experience. Lanita is the Founder of A Gentle Way Yoga studio in San Diego, CA. With over 13,000 classes and private sessions taught since 1996, she is a leading expert in gentle-traditional hatha yoga and yoga therapy.

TESTIMONIAL
I just finished a weekend with Lanita, and all I can say is that I believe that Lanita's training should be mandatory training for every yoga teacher. Her ability to work with all ages, levels and abilities, and to be able to customize each class for the needs of those who walk in is amazing to watch. Her knowledge and intuition guide her, and her beautiful spirit, and not so perfect or thin body help us all realize that yoga is much much more than just pose. Sheila - San Diego

Hatha yoga is one of the four main traditions of tantra yoga. Tantric hatha yoga embraces the practice of asana, pranayama, kriya and meditation as a means to access our Spirit. Through our physical practice, we stoke our internal fire to channel prana and awaken the central channel. Unlike asceticism, in tantra, we use our body and mind to tap deeply into our creative source. When we honor that Source we discover that we already are what we are seeking. We empower our practice and we cultivate joy and contentment in our daily life.

In this 24 hour advanced yoga teacher training, we will explore:
  • Tantric Philosophy, including dualism and non-dualism
  • The historical progression of tantra, including the Upanishads, The Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Shiva Samhita
  • Tantra as a science Sri Vidya and Maha Vidyas
  • Five themes of teaching tantra

This enrollment runs from Sat Oct 18, 2014 - Sun Oct 19, 2014
This workshop is designed to acquaint yoga students, teacher trainees and teachers with anatomical vocabulary, musculoskeletal structures and movement patterns in relation to the yoga asanas.

Our particular focus for the workshop will be on the upper back, neck and shoulders. Our time together will involve lecture, demonstration and discussion as well as direct work in the asanas.

We will:

  • Understand how muscles interact to form movement patterns in yoga poses
  • See demonstrations of both structure and function
  • Participate in asana practice sessions that allow you to feel, in your own body, the actions of muscles and the dramatic effects of subtle changes in alignment
Open to all levels. This event qualifies as 10 hours of master teacher electives for Prairie Yoga teacher trainees or continuing education credits for registered Yoga Alliance teachers.

$275 by Friday, September 19, 2014; $325 thereafter

Introduction to Teaching Yoga to Children with Mira Binzen Next held on Sun, Feb 1, 2015 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This enrollment runs from Sun Feb 1, 2015 - Sun Feb 1, 2015
Children love Yoga. They love the movement and creative expression associated with the asanas, and they cherish the opportunity to “rest” at the end of each class. Based on sound child development principals, the ancient science of Yoga is turned into fun, engaging, age appropriate stuff kids love.

Children experience the same benefits from a Yoga practice as adults – increased body awareness, overall fitness, mental acuity and stress hardiness. By learning to teach Yoga to children you can help them:
  • Develop strength, flexibility and coordination – of both body and mind
  • Improve focus
  • Raise self-awareness
  • Build self-esteem
  • Release stress
  • Relax completely
  • Breathe well
  • Cultivate healthy habits
  • Generate a sense of inner peace and contentment they can share with the world
The practice of Yoga for children is unsurpassed as a form of preventative health – health on all levels – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Through stories and games children develop lifelong healthy habits and are supported in blossoming into their highest potential.
This 4-hour workshop includes an introduction to the benefits and specialized techniques of teaching Yoga to children ages 5 years old through teens as well as whole families. We then get to become the children and practice a class just as they do. A question and answer session follows with resources for further study. You will walk away with many tools and techniques to share with the children in your life as well as a deeper understanding of yoga.

Swami Satchidanada, a great spiritual leader said, “Children come into this world very pure. It’s up to the adults to help them stay bright, strong and healthy.”
