Yoga Sutra 1.2

Yoga Sutra 1.2
yogas citta vrtti nirodhah
Yoga is the process of reducing the fluctuations in our field of consciousness (heart-mind).

This sutra defines what yoga is. Yoga recognizes that our thoughts can stir us up, lead us astray, distract us, and create suffering. The techniques of yoga offer a variety of methods, such as physical postures, meditation and breathing techniques, that teach us how to calm and focus the mind. The intent is not to create a totally blank mind, but rather, to channel our thoughts in one direction. To have control over and choose what we want to focus on. One of my teachers described it like plowing a field - by practicing yoga you are creating channels that give your thoughts a direction. You can also think of it as training to focus on a single-thing - like a very skilled archer, nothing distracts you and the target is struck. The next sutra will explain what the ultimate target is and why we want to do this. - Lori Gaspar
